Save the date for the 2024AnnualTeachers of Color and Allies (TOCA) Summit

Tuesday, November 19, 2024 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University Memorial Center

The Teachers of Color and Allies (TOCA) Summit is a free event that gathers education students, local educators of colorand allies to provide collegial support, opportunities for networking and mentoringand insights into best practices in education.

This year's theme is “Navigating the Nuanced Narrative of Neutrality.” Given the current educational landscape and conversations with teachers, we recognize the need to support teachers navigating complex social and political issues from a “neutral” standpoint within their classroom and school community. To quote Archbishop Desmond Tutu, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

We would like to invite individuals, groups or organizations to submit a proposal to host a one-hour breakout session for the 2024 event. We would appreciate submissions aligned with the broader theme and/or any of the following topics:

  • We aim to rehumanize equity by bridging values and building justice-seeking systems to the benefit of marginalized groups and ideas:
    • Newcomer students
    • Navigating the outcome of the election
    • How to do DEI work without saying you are doing DEI work, including practices for teachers
  • Space for processing emotions (hopefully joy but maybe resilience)

Stay turned for more information! Registration opens mid-October.
