A new study by CU Boulder mortality researchers found that drug-related deaths among middle-aged white men have soared 25-fold since 1980. But contrary to recent reports, suicide and alcohol-related mortality has not increased substantially. The paper challenges the idea that economically-influenced "despair deaths" are killing middle-age white men, pointing to prescription painkillers and obesity instead.
