Advanced Space Transit and Residency Architecture (ASTRA)

Description: The ASTRA Project Team will work to support the CU Boulder Aerospace Bioastronautics (BIOASTRO) Group developing concepts to support the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) exploration goals and missions. As NASA plans to leave low Earth orbit for Mars, there will be a need for a habitat that astronaut crews can live and work in while making the multi-month trip. The University of Colorado is uniquely positioned to develop concepts for this exploration mission due to the presence of the CU Boulder Bioastronautics group that focuses on human spaceflight.

Their previous research and work on NASA programs like Gateway and the Habitats Optimized for Missions of Exploration (HOME) project well positions them for further habitat design work. The Graduate Project Team will complete the conceptual design of the REDHOUND vehicle, modify the existing HOME mockup to create a medium
fidelity mockup of a Mars Transit Habitat (MTH) to emulate the habitat module, and complete human factors testing to validate the layout of the habitat design.

The ASTRA Team will provide the technical services to BIOASTRO. Systems engineering and design tasks will be iterative to allow rapid development while maturing the design over time.
