Tale Summary

An ass who can no longer work for his master takes the journey away from his home and to Bremen where he plans to be a town musician. Along the way, he runs into a hound, cat, and cock who all join the ass to be musicians in Bremen. At nightfall, the group encounters a robbers’ cave with much food and many amenities. To get the robbers away from the cave, the animals devise a plan. They all sing, and hearing the cacophony of agonizing noise, the robbers flee the cave. The animals enjoy the food and shelter of the cave and when one of the robbers returns, they quickly scare him off so that the dwelling becomes theirs permanently.
