One day, her mother told her that her grandmother was unwell and instructed the girl to bring some little cakes and butter through the forest to her. In the woods, the girl met a wolf, who wanted to eat her but hesitated because of a nearby lumberjack. Instead, he asked her where she was headed, and after she told him the location of her grandmother’s house, he told her that they would race to reach it. He got there very quickly, and on arrival pretended to be Little Red-Riding-Hood so that he was let in, and ate the old woman. The girl took some time to reach the cottage, because she stopped often to look at nature on the way, and by the time she arrived the wolf had hid himself in the old woman’s bed. She heard the gruff voice of the wolf and thought that her grandmother must indeed be very sick. The wolf invited her to bed, and she was astonished to see how different her grandmother looked. She remarked on her great arms, her great ears, her great eyes, and her great mouth, and the wolf ate her up.

Fairy Tale Title

Little Red-Riding-Hood

Fairy Tale Author(s)/Editor(s)

Dinah Maria Mulock

Fairy Tale Illustrator(s)

Warwick Goble

Common Tale Type

Little Red Riding Hood

Tale Classification

ATU 333

Page Range of Tale

pp. 134-136

Full Citation of Tale

“Little Red-Riding-Hood.” The Fairy Book, Dinah Maria Mulock, New York: Mayflower Books, 1979, pp. 134-136.

Original Source of the Tale

Charles Perrault

Tale Notes

Tale Audio

[soundcloud width="70%" height="200" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" allow="autoplay" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1773060327&color=%23ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true&visual=true"][/soundcloud]

AVʪ and Curation

Kaeli Waggener, 2023

Book Title

The Fairy Book

Book Author/Editor(s)

Dinah Maria Mulock

Illustrator(s)

Warwick Goble

Publisher

Mayflower Books

Date Published

1979

Decade Published

1970-1979

Publisher City

New York

Publisher Country

United States

Language

English

Rights

Copyright not evaluated

Digital Copy

Available at the Internet Archive

Book Notes

A collection of classic tales, some English, and some from Perrault, d'Aulnois, and Grimm

Traditional

0

On

White
Sat, 10 Jun 2023 20:53:20 +0000 Anonymous 776 at /projects/fairy-tales “Little Red-Riding-Hood.” The Book of Fables and Folk Stories, Horace Elisha Scudder, Boston: Houghton Mifflin; 1919, pp. 1-4. /projects/fairy-tales/the-book-of-fables-and-folk-tales/little-red-riding-hood “Little Red-Riding-Hood.” The Book of Fables and Folk Stories, Horace Elisha Scudder, Boston: Houghton Mifflin; 1919, pp. 1-4. Anonymous (not verified) Sat, 02/04/2023 - 09:40

Categories:

1910-1919 ATU 333 Boston English Horace Scudder Little Red Riding Hood Source: France Source: Germany
Horace Scudder

Tale Summary

There was once a little girl who was well-loved by her mother, and even more by her grandmother, who made her a red cloak that suited the child so well that everyone called her “Little Red-Riding-Hood”. She is eaten and the story ends. This tale is the first Red Riding-Hood to be published so other authors have adapted it to continue the story and save the girl from the wolf. This tale has some words that are simplified; however, there is no obvious simplification of the tale for young readers. The illustrations are of Riding-Hood and the wolf and are in black and white. There also seem to be two different styles, suggesting that two different illustrators worked on this tale.

AVʪ and Curation

Alex Gibbons, 2022

Book Title

Old French Fairy Tales

Book Author/Editor(s)

Charles Perrault, Madame D’aulnoy

Illustrator(s)

Publisher

Little, Brown, and Company

Date Published

1899

Decade Published

1890-1899

Publisher City

Boston

Publisher Country

United States

Language

English

Rights

Public Domain

Digital Copy

Available at the CU Digital Library

Book Notes

The book itself is a standard hardcover book. He asks where she is going, and she tells him because she does not realize the danger. The wolf suggests that they each take separate paths to see who can get there faster. Little Red takes a longer time, as she is distracted by flowers and butterflies, and Gaffer Wolf makes it there first. He knocks on the door, pretending to be Little Red, and then eats up the grandmother. By the time Little Red arrives, he is waiting for her in bed. She is tricked and remarks on how different her grandmother looks. When she gets close enough and notices what big teeth ‘she’ has, the wolf eats her up.

Fairy Tale Title

Little Red Riding-Hood

Fairy Tale Author(s)/Editor(s)

Charles Perrault, J. On the other side of the wood was another pretty cottage, where the girl’s grandmother lived; she gave her granddaughter many gifts, including a little red hood, which is how the girl came to be known as Little Red Riding Hood. One day after breakfast, Little Red’s mother gave her a basket holding a cake, butter, and six eggs which the girl had found that morning, and instructed her to bring it to her grandmother, who had been ill. She advised her not to run, as she would break the eggs, but that she also must not loiter. There were many things to listen to and see in the woods, and Little Red decides to wander from the path to pick some wildflowers for her grandmother. When a wolf greets her, she is naively unafraid, and answers straightaway where she is headed towards. The wolf hurries onwards to the grandmother’s house, where he gobbles her up whole, and settles into bed to wait for the girl. When Little Red arrives, she remarks what big ears, eyes, nose, and teeth her grandmother has, not realizing it is a trick. The wolf lunges to eat her just like her grandmother, but at that moment, the girl’s father comes through the door with his axe and saves her by chopping off the creature’s head. Little red returns to her cottage and lives happily ever after with her parents.

Fairy Tale Title

Red Riding Hood

Fairy Tale Author(s)/Editor(s)

Louey Chisholm

Fairy Tale Illustrator(s)

Katharine Cameron

Common Tale Type

Little Red Riding Hood

Tale Classification

ATU 333

Page Range of Tale

pp. 1-5

Full Citation of Tale

“Red Riding Hood.” In Fairyland: Tales Told Again, Chisholm, Louey, illustrated by Katharine Cameron, New York: G. Little Red Riding Hood leaves her mother's house to visit her grandmother, meeting the wolf along the way. The wolf reaches the grandmother's house first and eats the grandmother. The ending is a strange mix between the Perrault version and the Grimm version. In this tale, Little Red Riding Hood arrives at the grandmother's house but just before she is eaten, a hunter kills the wolf (note that not getting eaten is unlike both the Perrault and the Grimm versions). The grandmother, however, does not ever emerge from the wolf's stomach (she is presumably dead, like the Perrault version). The common motif found in the Grimm version where they are both eaten but eventually emerge unharmed from the wolf's stomach is completely absent.

Fairy Tale Title

Little Red Riding Hood

Fairy Tale Author(s)/Editor(s)

Walter Crane

Fairy Tale Illustrator(s)

Walter Crane

Common Tale Type

Little Red Riding Hood

Tale Classification

ATU 333

Page Range of Tale

Full Citation of Tale

Crane, Walter. Little Red Riding Hood, London: John Lane, 1898.

Original Source of the Tale

Charles Perrault

Tale Notes

In this version, the wolf eats the grandmother and nearly eats Little Red Riding Hood, but a hunter kills the wolf at that exact moment.
