Olivia with a chickadeeCongratulations聽to Olivia and her co-authors Kathryn, Angela, Harriet Leeson and for publishing a recent paper in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology. After initially embarking on her undergraduate career as a Violin Performance major, Olivia completed聽her EBIO degree and honors thesis in our lab last year. For Olivia, her transition from music to studying bird song聽was a natural decision that followed her聽love of music聽and more, importantly, her聽curiosity about its nature. Olivia and her co-authors found that mountain chickadees in Boulder County sing different songs than mountain chickadees in California, but that black-capped chickadees in Colorado do not sound different from black-capped chickadees elsewhere. This is a potential example of either reproductive or agonistic character displacement! More work will be required to determine which one, but the initial results are very exciting. Congrats Olivia!
