The “most famous criminal mystery of the eighteenth century” (DNB) concerned Elizabeth Canning, an 18-year old servant, who disappeared on the evening of New Year’s Day 1753. She did not return until 28 days later, in a frightening condition, almost naked and emaciated and perilously exhausted—near death, it seemed.
