Education Building Honorary Naming Initiative

As of Feb. 9, 2023, the CU Board of Regents听approved the renaming of the Fleming Building to honor the lasting legacies and contributions of former CU Boulder School of Education faculty members Ofelia Miramontes and Leonard Baca. Learn more about their inspiring legacies.

Our School of Education is facing a unique opportunity to听consider community nominations for听the honorary renaming of our campus building.听

Our school moved to a听newly renovated campus home听in 2020. As the next phase of the remodel and fundraising efforts听continue, we have听a historic opportunity to听rename听our building currently known as the Fleming Building,听a name that belonged to a former Law School Dean from when the building housed the Law School.

Together with a committee of alumni, donors, faculty, staff and students,听we have established an honorary听naming nomination process, and we invite you to submit nominations by听Monday,听Nov. 28, 2022.听

Project听Timeline

Summer 2022: Committee selection and criteria setting for honorary naming nominations
August-November 2022: Committee seeks nominations
December 2022: Committee reviews nominations and makes a recommendation to the Chancellor
February 2023: Once/if听approved by the Chancellor, we submit听the recommendation to the Regents for review
Fall 2024: New building dedication听

Criteria

The nominee鈥檚 work and contributions should embody the听mission of the School of Education听and our commitments to democracy, diversity, equity and justice.

In addition, the nominee should be someone who has supported the education of informed educators, researchers, policy makers and/or community leaders.听

We seek a nominee who has transformed the field of education and/or educational practices in pre-K-12 schools and universities.听

The nominee should be an alumni, faculty or staff member who has a connection with the School of Education.

The nominee may be living, deceased or retired. According to regental rules, if you nominate听someone who is deceased or retired they may not be proposed earlier than five years after their death or retirement. Additionally, the person may not be currently working at the university.
