World War II veteran听Norman Jaramillo听(IntlAf鈥�50) and his wife Florence Jaramillo write that their two grandchildren are avid chess players who played in national chess tournaments in Nashville, Tenn., in April. Norman and Florence look forward to celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 6, 2013. The couple lives in Valley Stream, N.Y.

Frequent Conference on World Affairs participant听Dave Grusin听(Mus鈥�56) returned to the university in April for the conference. His brother,听Don Grusin听(Soc鈥�63, MEcon鈥�67), joined him from Los Angeles. Having spent most of his professional life writing film scores, arranging and producing jazz albums and recording, Dave has recently spent more time performing and traveling as a keyboardist, mostly with Lee Ritenour, an old friend and studio mate. He lives in Santa Fe, N.M., with his wife, Nancy Newton.

Former CU regent听Pete Steinhauer* (A&S鈥�58) wrote a book听Remembering Vietnam 1966-67听for those who have been in the military. Active Boulder residents Pete and his wife听Julianne Mattingly Steinhauer听(Mus ex鈥�60) have been to Vietnam 24 times since 1989 for volunteer work.

Structural engineer听Rich Weingardt听(CivEngr鈥�60, MS鈥�64, HonDocSci鈥�11) was quoted in听The听New York Times Magazine听on April 7 in the 鈥淲ho Made That?鈥� article on the Ferris wheel. George Ferris 鈥減robably had more to do with the acceptance of structural steel than anybody alive at his time,鈥� Rich told Pagan Kennedy who wrote the article.听Rich wrote a biography on Ferris titled听Circles in the Sky, The Life and Times of George Ferris.听He lives in Denver.

Three years ago听Ann Kern Ehrenclou听(Mus鈥�60) retired as music coordinator for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Schools in California. She continues to be involved in many musical activities including presenting teacher workshops in elementary music education, playing flute/harpsichord or piano duos, performing in a five-member musical theater group to raise money for charity and serving as president of the Peninsula Committee for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She writes that the outstanding music education she received at CU has been the foundation of all her music endeavors.

In March听Nan Riethmayer Phifer听(A&S鈥�60) led a demonstration workshop, 鈥淪pontaneous, Compelling Memoirs for Life-Review,鈥� for the American Society on Aging Conference in Chicago. Her book,Memoirs of the Soul: A Writing Guide,听has received a Reviewers鈥� Choice Award and made the list of 鈥淭op Ten Reads.鈥� Nan lives in Eugene, Ore.

In July听Risto Marttinen听(Hist鈥�62) will compete in the National Senior Games in Cleveland. He will be hurling the discus, shot and javelin. 鈥淭he ancient Greeks considered the greatest athlete to be the discus thrower. I鈥檒l try to do my best!鈥� he writes. Risto lives in Lexington, Ky.

Michael A. Berniger*听(IntlAf鈥�63) is president elect of the CU-Boulder Directors Club.听Michael is a founder and past president of the University Club at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs established in 1981 to serve as a liaison between the university and the business and professional community.听 He is a board of directors member of the Pikes Peak Community Foundation and is legal counsel and a board of directors member of the Esperanza Education Foundation and El Cinco de Mayo. He is a founder of the law firm of Berniger, Berg & Diver established in 1977.

Composer, producer, arranger and pianist听Don Grusin听(Soc鈥�63, MEcon鈥�67) has recorded and produced scores of Grammy Award-winning albums. In April Don participated in the 65th Conference on World Affairs. He is recipient of the CU-Boulder Alumni Association鈥檚 George Norlin Award for distinguished lifetime achievement. He tours internationally, records and teaches. Don lives in Los Angeles.

Marty Coffin Evans* (Engl鈥�64) stays active in the CU-Boulder community. She does freelance writing for the听Coloradan听magazine, covering alumni across the country. She also serves on the College of Music Advisory Board. She and husband听Robert Trembly II听(Fin鈥�70) live in Boulder.

Jeannie Doepper Thompson* (Zool鈥�64) and听Jack Thompson* (Hist鈥�64, MA鈥�70) built $1.6 million in combined gifts to trigger a new $2 million jazz studies program endowment in March. To recognize and honor them the program will be renamed the Thompson Jazz Studies Program. The couple serves as Boulder campus chairs of the CU Creating Futures fundraising campaign. Jeannie also serves on the College of Music Advisory Board and as an ex-officio member of the Alumni Association board, offering insight and guidance. The couple lives in Boulder.

Author听Philip Hart听(Soc鈥�66) is working on publishing the second edition of his 2007 book听African Americans and the Future of New Orleans.听It will be published to coincide with the eighth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which hit New Orleans on Aug. 29, 2005. Philip is adviser to the Smithsonian Institution National Air & Space Museum and its permanent and traveling 鈥淏lack Wings: American Dreams of Flight鈥� exhibits since 1982. This spring the exhibit traveled to Spartanburg, S.C., Canton, Ohio, and Fort Worth, Texas. Philip lives in Los Angeles.

After owning Signature Bank for 18 years听Hugh Scheurer* (A&S鈥�66) sold the company and retired. He has been living in Dallas as a banker since he graduated. He spends time writing and being with his grandchildren, as well as fishing and hiking, much of it in Colorado. He writes that his daughter and her children live in Parker, Colo., so Hugh always has a reason to visit.

Boulder resident听Norris Hermsmeyer* (Acct, Bus鈥�67) serves as treasurer on the Board of Directors of Sister International. Locally he is chair of the Boulder-Mante (Mexico) Sister City relationship. Norris serves on the planning committee for the 60th anniversary celebration of the University Memorial Center at CU-Boulder.

Former Alumni Association staffer and writer听Nancy Smith Rasmussen听(Engl鈥�67) retired in May from her position as associate director of alumni relations at University of Pennsylvania law school. She looks forward to part-time and contractual work in various fields. In November she had an article published in the听Penn Law Journal.听Nancy lives in Philadelphia.

Richardson, Texas, resident听John Mecom听(PhDZool鈥�69) published his second novel,听Luca鈥檚 Run.听Much of the story takes place in Boulder. The book is available at Amazon.

Gary E. Smith听(Edu鈥�69, MPubAd鈥�71) and听Diane Yokel Smith听(MEdu鈥�86) have entered second careers. Diane, after a career of teaching ESL at the university level, is a part-time administrative assistant at their church and a volunteer tutor in Littleton Public Schools. Gary has written a historical murder mystery,听Murder in the Rockies, under the pen name G. Eldon Smith. The novel is set in Denver of the 1890s and will be published in October 2013. The couple lives in Centennial, Colo.

While teaching CU medical students and working as a hospitalist at the Medical Center of Aurora, Colo.,听Gordon Herrald听(DistSt鈥�69) received the Professor of the Year Award in 2011. In October 2012 he joined the full-time faculty at CU鈥檚 University Hospital as assistant professor and OBGYN hospitalist. Gordon and his wife听Anne Rutherford Herrald听(Psych鈥�69) have two children and welcomed their first grandchild.

For her pioneering studies in Type 1 diabetes and health disparities听Diane Wagener听(ApMath鈥�71) was elected fellow of the American Associations for the Advancement of Science. She has conducted genetic epidemiologic studies and health policy in all three research venues 鈥� academia at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, government with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and private at RTI International. Diane lives in San Diego.

Trial lawyer and community leader听Frances Koncilja听(Law鈥�72) announced the launch of Alphabet Lawyers, a free online legal directory that includes contact information for more than 19,000 Colorado lawyers, judges and court personnel. Frances, its president and CEO, invested close to two years developing the site, researching, collecting and validating data as well as creating the search functions. She lives in Littleton, Colo.
